Poplar Bark Shakes

We’re moved in and will do some final updates to the blog over the next couple weeks. Tops on the list is our use of poplar bark shakes on selected interior and exterior areas. Poplar bark was used as roofing and siding for hundreds of years by Native Americans, and now it has come back — in 18″ shake form — as a novel siding for mountain style homes. Poplar bark is used to add color, texture, and variety to the home’s look. Properly installed, it is a weather-proof and maintenance free siding that will last for 50+ years.

In our home, the main showcase for the poplar bark is on the back porch, where it covers an entire wall and gets some special lighting. In this location, people will be able to see the bark up close, touch it, and even smell it’s woodsy aroma. Secondary locations are on the front porch gable, and inside above our mudroom cabinets in the foyer. We’ve got a little bit left, and are considering putting more bark as an interior accent somewhere.
